On the 12th of September, in the heart of Germany’s financial might, Porsche unveiled its successor to the brand’s 356 model. Project 901, as it was called, had a two litre air-cooled engine, producing 130 hp. Mere metres away from Stuttgart’s f inest stand, visitors to the 1963 Frankfurt IAA Motor Show could feast their eyes on something just as fresh. Just three days earlier, a group of journalists were given their first look at Alfa Romeo’s new offering, a stylish two door based on the Giulia platform. The Tipo 105 coupe was powered by an all aluminium 1.6 litre twin cam engine, making some 119 hp, a little power bump over the Giulia, courtesy of a pair of side draft Webers. The Giulia Sprint GT wasn’t even the biggest news of the day, as Alfa used the occasion to showcase its brand-spanking-new factory in Arese, a state-of-the-art facility erected to put together the most sophisticated en gineering dreams the minds of Italy could come up with at the time…
